Its not that odd, its the catacombs under Paris, where the put the bodies they removed from the cemetery Les Innocents. Les Innocents was a festering, stinking, hell hole for lack of a better explanation. They would dig pits and keep them open till the bodies amounted to 1500, then would cover them, after a few months the bodies would be dug up again and stored in the walls of buildings. This was all in the middle of the city too. They say Les Innocents was so horrible smelling that even some distance away in the market, you could almost see the meat rotting before your eyes, and local pubs reported that their wine had turned to vinegar from the stench. They didn't make the catacombs till like 1789. Les Innocents had existed from the Roman Empire era.
